Listening

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

Do you talk more than you listen?

I have a friend like that. She’s a wonderful person, and occasionally we have some good conversations. But she sure loves to talk! Most often I can’t get a single word in before she interrupts me and starts talking again. I used to get annoyed by it or try raising my voice so she’d stop talking and listen to me. It didn’t work. She’d just raise her voice more and talk over me. ;-)

Why would she do this? Did she not want to hear what I had to say about the subject?

No, I don’t think that’s it. I think she needed the attention on herself. It’s an insecurity of sorts. Maybe you know someone like that too. They usually make a big entrance and try to be the focus of the party. If they’re not the focus, they get bored and want to leave. When others are paying attention to them, it’s a validation that they’re a good person, they’re interesting, they’re attractive, etc. In case you haven’t noticed, most people LOVE to talk about themselves.

With my friend, I finally decided to try listening. I shut up, stopped trying to butt into the conversation, and just listened. Before long, something interesting occurred to me. During the moments when I felt I wanted to speak up, it was to offer advice to some problem she was hashing over. But she didn’t want my advice, she wanted to vent about the problem!

What is it about women that makes us want to “fix” everything? Even funnier, while I sit and just listen, my friend usually comes to the solution herself during the course of “her” conversation. Then she thanks me for my help! LOL :-D

If you want to make someone in your life feel valued and important, just listen. When they talk to you, stop trying to insert your advice and wisdom. They already have the answers inside, just as you do. Certainly if a person asks, “what do you think?” go ahead and give your advice.

But otherwise, try listening more than you talk, and see what happens.

New ideas

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

You know those days when you get a great idea, but you don’t have time to explore it? You promise yourself you’ll look into it later, and then what happens? Life gets in the way and you never do explore it further. Or worse, you completely forget what the idea was and can’t recall it for anything!

Well today, I’m making a committment to exploring a new idea. At least one. If I get more, I will explore those also, or at least write them down so I don’t forget them.

Believing in Magic

Monday, June 20th, 2005

I just sent out this week’s Newsletter to my subscribers, and the topic is Enchantment.

Remember when you were a kid and you believed in fairies, elves and leprochauns? It’s so sad that we are trained to forget all that stuff as we get older! Life was so much more fun and exciting when we believed a fairy might be just around the next bend in the road.

I don’t know if fairies exist or not. But I do want to capture their energy! I want that feeling of lighthearted fun, laughter, excitement, joy and play.

Today I WILL believe in fairies.

I will believe in magic and mystery.

I will recapture the joy and awe of my childhood, and let it color my entire day. :-)

Affirmations and Faith

Sunday, June 19th, 2005

When we want something so badly, it’s easy to worry about losing it (sometimes before we even “have” it).

In Doreen Virtue’s The Lightworker’s Way she writes about a different kind of prayer. Doreen’s mother taught her that instead of “asking” in prayer, she should “affirm” in prayer.

So instead of praying, “Please God, can I have this?” - she would pray, “Dear God, I know that this will happen for me. Thank you!”

Why is this important? Because it actually directs our intent in the desired area and can set things in motion.

So, what have you been asking for in prayer? What have you been wanting? Try affirming to God that you KNOW it will be given. Don’t beg, don’t plead, don’t whine. Just affirm. Have faith. Trust that you will be given the very best thing possible. :-)

Releasing Grudges

Wednesday, June 15th, 2005

One of my close friends has two family members who are dying. Because of some past arguments, several adult siblings in this family refuse to speak to each other. Still. Even though two of them will shortly be gone from this earth. They have shut each other out permanently, and neither side will release their anger and forgive.

I understand anger and hurt. Pretty much everyone has experienced hurt from a friend or family member. But is it worth hanging onto that anger, even when the one who hurt you is dying? And the ones who are dying won’t let go of the anger either. They will leave this earth still feeling angry at their siblings. What is the sense?

Life is too short. Don’t let grudges fester in your heart. Tell your loved ones how you feel. If you’re angry, tell them you’re angry. But talk to them. Keep them in your life if you can. It’s the love that counts, not the arguments.

Feel the Dream

Monday, June 13th, 2005

I’ve just finished reading a great book called The Attractor Factor by Joe Vitale. One of the greatest visualization techniques in that book has really been working for me and I want to share it with you. He says that the trick to manifesting what you want is to see it and feel it as if it were already reality. I’ve heard of that technique before but he adds a lot more to the process than any material I’ve seen yet.

I’ve been spending a little time each day immersing myself in my dream. And you know what? It works! Amazing things are beginning to happen. Little synchronicities are happening that are leading me right where I want to go. It’s awesome! :-)

If you have a dream in your heart, give this a try. Just visualize your life as you want it to be, and really FEEL the way you will feel when it actually does happen for you. Will you feel relieved, excited, happy, joyous? See the pictures in your mind and feel the emotions in your heart. This will actually ATTRACT what you want. You can make it happen. :-)

P.S. Don’t just do this for one day either, make it a part of your daily routine. You will be amazed.

Smile

Saturday, June 11th, 2005

Today I will smile. As often as I can, and as big as I can. It makes you feel good, try it! :-)

What gave me this idea was a couple of things that happened to me yesterday. During the afternoon I was walking through my living room, and noticed something bright on the ceiling. I looked up and saw a perfect smiley face, like this =) except it was upright. The sunlight was coming in the window and shining on something on my husband’s desk, and bouncing that reflection up onto the ceiling. It was so cute, and it did make me smile.

Later at the grocery store, I walked past a display of Persian violets, and something about them pulled me over to look. They just had such a perky, happy vibe to them that I had to smile again. A few aisles later, I passed some summer themed cakes, and they were all decorated with bright colored icing, and many of them had smiley faces on them! Think the universe is trying to tell me something?

I once read an article that just the act of purposely smiling can lift your spirits. I can’t remember the details, but there was an actual physiological connection between the muscles we use to smile and our mood.

So let’s smile today. As often as you can remember to, let your face break out in a huge smile. Don’t give a little fake grin, really let ‘er rip! :-D

Intuition

Friday, June 10th, 2005

It’s amazing how many nudges and signs come our way on a daily basis. Most of us are too busy rushing around to pay attention. But when we do, we can be led to miracles and most often, the very information we’ve been waiting for.

Today, pay attention to those little feelings that lead you to the next step of your journey. If you get an urge to pick up a certain book, or explore a certain webpage, or call a friend, do it. You just never know where it will lead!

Gratitude

Wednesday, June 8th, 2005

This world has so much beauty and joy to be thankful for. Think about it, we are participating in a grand experiment every single day! It is a test of strength, courage and perseverance for sure. But this is also wonderful because it builds us up, makes us more than we would otherwise be.

Today I will express deep gratitude at every opportunity. I love my life, my family and friends, my work, and the very fact that I’m here right now. I’m so deeply thankful for the many blessings in my life.

Join me if you will … what are you grateful for? :-)
