Embracing change

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Change is scary sometimes, isn’t it? I’m a person that likes routine. I like being able to plan ahead and know where I’m going before I get there. Sometimes life won’t allow me to do that. ;-)

When something unexpected comes up, instead of fighting against it, try to see the potential and opportunity in the situation. Don’t fear change, embrace it! Look on the positive side and make a mental list of all the ways this new situation can be good for you. Then just keep on moving forward.

Releasing the Old, Making Way for the New

Friday, July 29th, 2005

Are you clinging to something that is holding you back? Perhaps a fear, belief, anger, pain from your past? Release it!

In order to make room in our lives for new, better circumstances, we need to let go of the old ones that no longer serve us. It can be scary, and sad. But once we do it, such a feeling of freedom and joy takes over us! We truly feel lighter and unencumbered.

Do it today. Let go of your fears, pain and sadness. Anything that is holding you back, drop it. Embrace your joy and courage. Go out and make today a day that you can look back and smile upon. :-)

Always moving forward

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Do you ever wish you could go back to an easier time in your life? A time when you had no responsibilities (or less anyway), a happier time, a less stressful time, a simpler time?

We can’t go back. Even if we could, we are no longer the same people we were when we were “back there.” We wouldn’t fit in that situation anymore. Even if we could squeeze in, we wouldn’t be happy because we’ve now outgrown that situation.

It can be scary to keep moving forward, but it’s a blessing that we can! Fear of the unknown keeps many people stuck in life, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Whatever direction you long to move in, take a step toward it. Then another, and another. Don’t worry about whether you’ll like the place when you get there, because if you keep taking more steps, you will keep moving on.

The scenery is always changing and that’s a good thing! :-)

To act, or not to act?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

Today my intention is to look before I leap. Sometimes we get a great idea and immediately lunge forward to put it into action before fully thinking it through. On occasion that can pay off well, but other times we should really take a few minutes to breathe and contemplate before diving into action.

What is your long-term vision? And will this new concept fit well with it? Will it move you closer to your goal or distract you away from it?

Finishing

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Are you a starter or a finisher? For most of my life I’ve been a great starter, and not so much of a finisher! I love to start new projects. It’s so exhilarating to start something new, something exciting. But then it starts to become a chore, or I get stuck on one aspect, and little by little I lose interest. Or get frustrated and give up altogether. Then along comes another idea, and I’m off again! ;-)

Well, finally, I’m beginning to love the feeling of FINISHING. Seeing a project all the way through to completion. This is a new feeling for me, because I never used to allow myself to get there! There is such value in that feeling. Such a sense of satisfaction and pride. I can look at these accomplishments and say, “Wow, I did that.” Which then fuels me into finishing more and more projects.

Of course, with some projects, I’ll never really be “finished.” They are entities in and of themselves. They take on life from the energy and effort I breathe into them, and they keep growing and evolving. This is a good thing!

There is a difference between deeming something “finished enough” — or giving up because we get frustrated about slow progress.

If you struggle with the same issues, my advice would be this: Be tough with yourself, but also be gentle with yourself. Be tough about forcing yourself to do the work you know must be done, but at the same time, be realistic about what you’re expecting of yourself. Too often, we expect nothing less than perfection from ourselves, and it’s just not going to happen. Do what you can in every moment. If you start something, finish it! At least finish it as much as it CAN be finished at this present time. And then release the thought that you didn’t do “enough.”

Let your projects and goals take on a life of their own. Keep pouring love, attention and effort into them, and they WILL grow. And one day not too far into the future, they will stand up, smile and say, “I’m finished!” — and how wonderful you will feel! :-)

Renewal

Monday, July 11th, 2005

Today, I feel reborn. In the past few days I’ve had some pretty amazing insights about myself, mostly regarding fear and the ways I hold myself back. Fear is a sneaky thing! It makes you think you’re doing the right thing, when in fact you are harming yourself more than anything else.

The good news is that we can start again at any time. We can choose to walk right through the fear and continue on our way. Fear is simply an emotion. It cannot force us to do anything (or NOT do anything) — unless we let it. We have to remember who is in charge, and act accordingly.

What do you fear? How does it affect your actions day by day? Would you change that if you could?

Pssst…you can! ;-)

Moving forward

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when we’ve got big dreams. We want them so badly, but yet, a tiny part of us is afraid to step forward and take the risk.

The good news is that we don’t have to take huge leaps ahead if we’re not ready. We can take a tiny step, then stop and look around. Everything is okay? Great, let’s take another step. And another.

Before we know it, we’ve reached our destination!

Needing, wanting, having

Friday, July 1st, 2005

It’s funny how we get so attached to the idea of something, isn’t it? We’ll hear or read about something great, and decide we need it right NOW. It becomes an obsession until we can attain it.

But here’s a little secret.

You don’t want what you think you want.

You want the FEELING the “thing” will provide for you. Let’s use an example. You see a commercial for a hot new car coming out. The commercial is thrilling, showing the car zooming through country roads, navigating hairpin turns, the driver with a big smile and the wind on his face. You want that. The car actually has nothing to do with it. You want the feeling the driver appears to have. Fun, freedom, excitement.

Do you need the car to provide that, or can you develop the same feelings in other ways? Ahh! Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Of course, I’m not saying you should never buy another car. ;-) All I’m saying is, the next time you think you “need” something, pay attention to what you REALLY need, what you are really attracted to. And then explore the many options for bringing that same energy into your life. There is always more than one way to your goal.
