Affirmations can be a powerful tool in your personal development program, but only if they are used correctly. If you’re like most people, you’ve been taught one part of the equation: reciting the words. Consistently changing your thoughts and words from negative to positive is a great first step because it helps you build a solid foundation for long-term growth. However, this approach alone may not bring about the change you desire.
No matter how specific and focused your affirmations are, reciting them dispassionately will be about as effective as reading a breakfeast cereal box each morning. You are engaging your mind, not your emotions. If you want to add power to your affirmations in a big way, you need to include one simple ingredient: EMOTION.
Emotion is the fuel that propels your intentions into being. As you recite empowering words and infuse them with strong emotion, you are in effect stepping into a new “reality” where your desire is a FACT. This alters the vibrations you’re emitting to the universe, and the universe responds by sending you experiences that match your vibrational signal.
However, any old emotion won’t work. Many self-help gurus will tell you to get excited and enthusiastic when you recite affirmations, and that technique does have its merits. But it’s infinitely more powerful to choose the RIGHT emotion for what you’re trying to attract, and place it squarely on the CORRECT part of your affirmation.
Let’s use an example to demonstrate the process. If you want to attract more money into your life, one effective affirmation would be:
“I always have more than enough money for everything I need.”
Which emotions would add power to this affirmation? Excitement? Enthusiasm? Happiness? Yes, those are good, but think for a moment how you would FEEL if such a statement were true. If you were able to wave a magic wand over your life and manifest a ton of money that eradicated any and all financial worries forever, how would you feel? Happy and excited, certainly. But once the intial excitement wore off, what would your mind-set be like?
I don’t know about you, but if that statement were true for me, I’d feel calm, secure, grateful, free and relieved. Worries about money would no longer exist in my reality. I would have no anxiety or stress. I’d feel very grounded and calm about my financial situation.
Do you see the direction your thoughts need to take to make this a powerful affirmation? You need to focus on the HAVING, not the NEEDING. If your affirmations are more like “begging sessions” where you are beseeching the universe to help you, you are only attracting more situations in which you need to beg for assistance!
You have to shift your mind-set so you are in effect stepping into a new reality, a reality in which you already have what you desire, a reality where financial worries (or other troublesome issues) don’t exist for you. As you keep reinforcing this truth in your mind, you can’t help but attract the corresponding reality!
So, if you previously gave up on affirmations because they don’t seem to work for you, give this technique a try. It can be a tricky feat at the beginning because you have to learn to turn your attention away from what you perceive to be your current reality and focus more on the reality you want to attract. But with consistent practice you should find yourself easily able to transition from where you are, to where you want to be.
P.S. I recently put the finishing touches on a short and sweet e-book titled, “Using Affirmations for Positive Change”, and I’m giving it away f-r-e-e. If you’ve had trouble making affirmations work for you in the past, this book will give you some effective techniques that can change everything. Learn three qualities affirmations should always have, what your current circumstances reveal about your thought patterns, how to change limiting beliefs with affirmations, one little word that can increase the effectiveness of your affirmations, one emotion that can boost the power of your affirmations, common affirmation mistakes and much more!

In my travels around the web this morning, I stumbled across an article that contained a negative review of the February 8th Oprah show about The Secret.
The author asks: “Is The Secret just about getting money, losing weight, having better sex or finding your “soul-mate?” While I was watching the February 8th Oprah Show I received an email that said it was a shame that The Secret was all about getting money. The emailer was looking for a more “meditative experience” and was disappointed.”
This is a common argument that I’ve seen and heard repeatedly since The Secret’s debut. It does raise a valid point: that money isn’t everything and doesn’t necessarily guarantee happiness. With that, I can agree.
But at the same time, a question always comes to my mind when I see these types of arguments: “What’s WRONG with having MONEY?”
There are two basic points I want to cover regarding this topic today:
1) “The Secret” is NOT all about money, sex and losing weight. Anyone who has seen the movie might recall mention of abundant health and wellness, the importance of gratitude, and the choice to feel good as often as possible. Regardless of our financial status, sex life or body weight, focusing on being healthy and happy can drastically improve our quality of life!
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t believe that it only covers money and material possessions. It’s a guide to creating more happiness and joy in your life, and that can certainly include more money, a better job and a thinner body.
2) Negative comments about money and possessions usually reveal one thing about the commenter: the belief that there is something wrong with being wealthy or prosperous.
Like many others, I was raised to believe that I didn’t need much. If I had a steady job and was making enough to get by, then I was doing good, and that’s all I should expect.
Thankfully, I’ve altered that belief. I decided I wanted to do more than “get by”. I wanted to create a life of ease and comfort for myself and my loved ones. I wanted the freedom to spend my days doing something I love, rather than trading hours for dollars at a job I didn’t like.
And as I’ve written many times before, when your core beliefs change, so do your external circumstances!
Here’s another way to look at it. Ask yourself what you believe your life purpose to be, and which circumstances would allow you to fulfill that purpose in the best and most effective way.
In my situation, I know I’m here to write and share my words with others. Could I still do that if I was living in a cardboard box under a bridge? Sure! I don’t need money to share my words with others. Well, except that I wouldn’t be able to afford a computer, or an internet connection. If I tried to share my words with others in print rather than online, I’d have to find a way to afford paper and perhaps a manual typewriter. (or a notebook and pen?) Not to mention that I’d be spending so much time trying to forage for food and warm clothing that I’d have less time to write.
You get my point.
Perhaps the author of the aforementioned article doesn’t desire wealth and riches. That’s fine! Really, just like there’s nothing wrong with being rich, there’s nothing wrong with living a meager lifestyle - as long as it’s done by conscious choice.
Feeling powerless over your circumstances and yearning for something better serves no one. Choosing to take control of your creative power and direct it in ways that improve ANY aspect of your life is a good thing.
Want a deeper spiritual life? Want to feel joyful and content on a daily basis? The Law of Attraction can help you do that, and more.
It’s all about getting clear about what you want, and choosing to attract something better, whatever that may be.
P.S. Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Years ago, when I rented my first apartment and moved out on my own, my mother bought me a bluebird of happiness glass figurine, which has held a place of honor in every home I’ve had since.
Over the years, this little glass bird has become a sort of talisman for me. A mere glance at it sparkling in the sunlight on my windowsill reminds me of the journey I’ve taken in claiming my right to be truly happy.
When my mother first gave me the bird, I wasn’t happy. I was excited about living on my own and eager for some new adventures, but I hadn’t a clue what true happiness was.
For more than ten years, this little glass bird sat silently and watched as I struggled to grow into myself, understand my purpose for being, and find the happiness I was meant to know. It witnessed the broken hearts, the disappointments, the loneliness and despair I seemed determined to repeat over and over again.
The harder I tried to create happiness through my job, my writing, my relationships, and my financial status, the more elusive it became.
One day, in a fit of frustration, I picked up this little bluebird of happiness figurine and studied it closely. What was the secret? What was I doing wrong? I pleaded with this little bird to give me some insight, help me to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle. But it remained still and silent.
I placed it back on the windowsill and started to walk away, when I noticed an increased sense of emptiness in my heart. I felt like I’d just lost something. Curious, I turned and picked up the bird again. Its smooth surface seemed warm in my hand, as if it pulsed with energy.
I heard laughter outside my window then, and glanced out to see three children playing in the yard next door. They were rolling around on the grass and apparently having a somersault contest to see who could do the most somersaults in a row without stopping. One of the children was a boy that appeared to be seven or eight years old. On his right leg, from knee to toes, was a cast. A set of crutches was lying on the grass nearby, as he also did his best to somersault across the lawn. Because of the cast on his leg, he was forced to do a sort of half-somersault, with his leg sticking out awkwardly to the side.
It was such a funny sight that I couldn’t help myself, I began laughing along with the children, standing there at my kitchen sink, holding a bluebird of happiness figurine in my hand. As I glanced back down at it, I finally understood. The truth came rushing at me like a freight train, and my laughter turned to tears of joy.
I was holding happiness in my hand, and in my heart. It was already here, in each moment. As I searched for happiness, it sat prettily on my windowsill, just waiting to be noticed.
Like the little boy with the cast on his leg, each of us has things that hinder us to some degree. We might be trying to improve our marriage, connect with our children, find career satisfaction, discover our purpose, find our soul mate, get into better shape, or any number of other aspirations. But not having those things doesn’t have to be a hindrance to the happiness we feel right NOW.
We can simply stick our cast off to the side and somersault anyway, with a big goofy grin on our face.

I recently participated in a Writers’ Meme in which we had to draw up a contract with ourselves. The point was to get clear about what we want to accomplish with our writing, and make an agreement with ourselves to stay with that vision, whatever it takes. (Thanks to Diane and Carson for this awesome exercise!)
A day or two before I was tagged to participate in the meme, my thoughts were already moving in that direction and I scribbled out a rudimentary contract in my personal journal. It was important for me to do that because I felt like I had veered far off the path I was meant to be walking.
I write a lot about the Law of Attraction in this blog and on my Wings for the Heart website because I really believe we have the power to make our lives into anything we want. At the same time, I also believe in a sort of pre-destined “purpose” that each of us has. I think we’re all born with very special talents and tendencies that we’re supposed to use on this earth. Why? To contribute something of value. To make our mark and leave the place better than when we found it.
That doesn’t mean we have to go on some grand mission to change the world ourselves. It means we simply focus on sharing what we have with the world. For me, that means writing from my heart, from the depths of my being, and sharing it with others. For you, it might mean uplifting others with your artwork, touching others with your singing, helping and healing with your medical skills, or nurturing with your cooking skills.
However, too many of us get caught up in doing what we *think* we should be doing - according to what society, our parents, teachers and friends tell us is best for us. Or worse - we choose our path according to how it affects our finances. We say, “Well, I’d love to be a portrait artist on the boardwalk in Atlantic City, but since I can’t earn enough money doing that, I’ll work at a bank.”
I’m not one to scold others for settling - I’ve done it myself for far too long! What amazes me is that we come to these conclusions WITHOUT EVEN TRYING to determine whether they’re really true or not. We just assume. And according to the Law of Attraction, when we believe something - we make it true.
Today I want to encourage you to take another look at your dreams, the ones you tucked away in a safe place and plan to pursue “someday”. Then I want you to question your beliefs about them. Is it really true that you can’t make them happen right now? Is it really true that you couldn’t earn enough money from them? Really?
I’m finally realizing something powerful about my own life, and I want to share this secret with you: there is no tomorrow. There is no “someday”. If you want to bring your dreams into reality, NOW is the time.
That’s one stumbling block we run into with traditional goal-setting, it focuses more on the future than right now. Rather than focusing on what we “will” do (eventually), we need to become what we want to be right now.
So, rather than setting goals that reside in some far-off future, I want you to make an agreement with yourself, beginning now. Draw up a contract with yourself. Get clear about what you REALLY want, and vow to bring it into being. You don’t have to figure out your whole plan today, just the first step. As you take that first step, doors will open, opportunities will appear, and your vision will get a bit clearer. And so it will continue with each step you take on your journey.
