The Last One

In my house, there is an unspoken rule: never take the last one. Of anything.

The last bagel, the last serving of milk, the last slice of cake, the last ear of corn . . . it will sit there and rot before anyone will take it for themselves.

I’ve seen this at parties and gatherings too. Guests will eat all the appetizers you place in front of them - until there is only one left on the platter. Then everyone is mysteriously too full to eat another bite. ;-)

It’s an attempt to be courteous, of course - don’t hog it all yourself, leave some for others. Our mothers taught us well.

What a metaphor this is for the way we relate to abundance and prosperity too.

We feel guilty receiving money or other forms of abundance. We deny the things we really want because we feel greedy even asking for them. We worry that the more we take, the less others will have.

You can probably guess what I’m going to say: THERE IS NO “LAST ONE”. There may appear to be shortages, but lack is an illusion. It’s all in our minds.

If you feel greedy about accepting more abundance into your life, there’s a great antidote for it: give more.

Greed and generosity cannot co-exist in the same place at the same time.

The more you give, the more you’ll receive. The more you accept for yourself, the more you’ll have to give.

I’m giving you permission to take the “last one,” because I know that more will be arriving shortly. When they do, take the platter and pass them around. There is plenty for everyone. :-)
