Every time I come into the house from our attached garage, my cats love to play a game with me. One or more of them will hear me coming and crouch at the door inside the house. As soon as I open the door, they dart out into the garage. They are indoor cats, so even a visit to the garage seems like a grand adventure to them. All kinds of new stuff to investigate and plenty of bugs for hunting, oh boy!
Usually I’m pretty good at balancing on one leg, putting the other foot at the door opening to block any escape attempts, while simultaneously turning the door knob with one hand and juggling my purse, keys, and sometimes groceries in the other hand – and I can stop them from running out there. But sometimes one or more of them will outsmart me and slip past anyway.
This morning I barely managed to prevent Onyx from getting out there, and she gave a frustrated “Meow!” in response. I laughed and said, “Why are you so interested in the garage anyway? There’s nothing out there but cold, cars, and cobwebs!” She didn’t look convinced that that stuff wasn’t interesting. What cracks me up is that when my cats do get into the garage, they walk around, sniff everything, get bored and scratch at the door to come back into the house. But that never stops them from wanting to get out there next time!
And we are no different than the cats, really. How often do we get hooked on perceptions and expectations? We get it into our heads that we want a certain object or experience and we work ourselves into a lather in our attempts to get it! If we don’t get it, we’re frustrated and disappointed. If we do get it, we feel the brief thrill of victory for a moment and then go, “That’s it?” Then we’re off to the next big desire and repeat the process all over again.
We’re ALWAYS going to want what we don’t have, and feel bored with what we do have. It’s human nature (and cat nature, I guess). And desires aren’t such a bad thing, either, I’m not trying to say they are. But it helps if we can identify what we’re REALLY wanting – because sometimes that desire can be met in other ways.
For example, when my cats attempt to get into the garage, they’re really after a sense of adventure and excitement – not anything specific that’s stored in the garage. They get that same thrill when I try to wrap a gift and they dive into the pile of wrapping paper and ribbon (with me shouting “get out of there, you’re ripping the paper!” LOL). Or when I finish unloading groceries and leave a big, inviting pile of empty bags for them to rustle around in. Or when I start up the vacuum cleaner and they run for their lives and hide under the beds. Or when Onyx sits on the toilet lid and unravels an entire roll of toilet paper onto the floor, then shreds it into a million pieces. LOL
My point is – it’s all about attitude and perception! Just because you think a certain experience or activity will satisfy your desire doesn’t mean it will. Or there may be a myriad of other ways you could satisfy it – rather than getting hooked on one specific experience and feeling frustrated when it doesn’t happen.
The trick (for me at least) is to identify the real ESSENCE of what I desire. I do that by delving deeper whenever I feel a “want” pop up within me. Why do I want it? What will it do for me? Can I satisfy the desire in other, simpler ways?
There’s nothing wrong with wanting, as long as you’re clear about what you REALLY want (which is usually some kind of feeling or experience – not the physical object you’ve connected it to) and being open to receiving in many possible forms.
And on a side note, life becomes much more fun when you learn to see every experience as a grand adventure! Who said cats can’t be good teachers?
