Allowing Wellness . . . or Not

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Today’s Daily Quote by Abraham-Hicks is so revealing, and so simple:

Wellness that is being allowed, or the wellness that is being denied, is all about the mindset, the mood, the attitude, the practiced thoughts. There is not one exception, in any human or beast; because, you can patch them up again and again, and they will just find another way of reverting back to the natural rhythm of their mind. Treating the body really is about treating the mind. It is all psychosomatic. Every bit of it, no exceptions. Excerpted from a workshop in Philadelphia, PA on Monday, May 13th, 2002We’re either allowing the natural flow of wellness through our lives, or we’re not.

That’s a good reminder for those of us who keep feeling like we have to “do” or “get” something through our manifestation attempts.

It’s not about getting or doing, it’s about BEING and ALLOWING.

Can’t get much easier than that! :-)

What Story Are You Telling Yourself?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

I was just reading Jeannette Maw’s Good Vibe blog and she has a great post, The “Truth” About Affirmations.

Do they work or not work?

Well, both! :-)

In my lifetime, I have recited many thousands of affirmations. Some of them I only used once. Some of them have become a permanent part of my mental chatter. Can you guess which ones came true?

Jeannette cites some great examples on the power of beliefs, and I agree that we can convince ourselves that virtually anything is true.

When I was a child, I would occasionally spend the night at my grandparents’ house, along with my younger brother. My grandparents lived about a half mile from a busy highway, so all through the night you could hear tractor trailer trucks and other traffic passing by. However, because it was in the distance it sounded like a strange roaring.

Not knowing what the sound was, I finally asked my grandmother and she told my brother and I that a big dragon lived under the ground in her backyard. At night, she said, he would open a trap door and come up to the earth’s surface, looking for food (we imagined, wide-eyed, that this “food” might be small children, even though she didn’t exactly say so).

For years after that, I was afraid to go into my grandmother’s backyard - especially when it started getting toward dusk.

Okay, you’re thinking, “Yeah, but you were a kid. Kids will believe almost anything.”

Hang on, it gets better.

Years later, my grandmother and I were laughing over that old story and how it scared the pants off my brother and I, and she shared something funny with me.

Later that same night when she told my brother and I about the dragon, she put us to bed and then went to get ready for bed herself. She went into the bathroom which faced the backyard, and while she was in there she heard a scraping sound on the window screen outside. The hair on the back of her neck stood up and she felt really frightened - and exited the bathroom in a hurry! :-)

It’s not just kids who will believe almost anything. If you create something in your mind and make it vivid enough - you can convince yourself it’s true. No, of course Grammy didn’t REALLY believe there was a dragon in her backyard, but her mind sure started running away with the possibility - which made her feet run out of the bathroom. LOL

As funny as that story is, it really demonstrates the power of the mind. That dragon is a perfect example of our negative thoughts, limiting beliefs and self-doubt.

The good news is that this same power of the mind can help us to be more confident, successful, prosperous and happy. Like all powers, it can be used for good or ill.

It’s all in what we choose to believe is true. What do you want to be true in your own life? Turn it into a vivid storyline and keep telling it to yourself. It works. :-)

In case you missed it, I recently posted a list of 101 Power Affirmations that you can use. They’re a good start, but feel free to alter them to suit your own needs better.

If you prefer to write your own affirmations from scratch, I have a few good articles on how to do it:

You’ve got all the tools you need to write the greatest story of your life - your life IS the story. :-)

Go BIGGER With Your Manifestations

Monday, February 25th, 2008

You hear it all the time, “start small, attract a cup of coffee.” I’ve even said it myself, and it can work if you’re feeling overwhelmed about using the Law of Attraction. We’re used to thinking of smaller things being easier to achieve.

But sometimes that focus can backfire too, because smaller isn’t always easier - especially when it comes to the Law of Attraction!

One of the problems with “small” manifestations is that you really don’t care about them one way or the other. As we all know, the Law of Attraction is activated by your thoughts, emotions and beliefs. How much emotion can you generate over a cup of coffee? Little emotion = low energy.

Personally I love coffee, so I can definitely feel emotional over it. LOL :-) But, do I need to manifest it? No. I’ve got some right in my cupboard; I can make a pot whenever I want.

I’m not trying to pick on this popular advice because the coffee isn’t the point, I know that.

But I want to offer some alternative advice for people who can’t seem to manifest a cup of coffee, a blue feather, or whatever other small thing they’re focusing on: GO BIGGER.

On page 95 of The Secret, Jack Canfield shares how he spent most of his early life feeling limited and focused on lack. He says, “It was only when I met W. Clement Stone that I began to shift my life. When I was working with Stone he said, ‘I want you to set a goal that’s so big that if you achieved it, it would blow your mind, and you would know it’s only because of what I’ve taught you that you would have achieved this goal.’”

Canfield went on to set a goal of earning $100,000 in a year - quite a huge jump from his existing $8,000 yearly income!

According to Stone’s instructions, he spent time each day visualizing his goal already achieved. He made a fake $100,000 bill and stuck it to the ceiling over his bed so it was the first thing he saw each morning upon waking. Whenever he saw that bill, he visualized having a $100,000 a year lifestyle.

Through a few strange, nearly miraculous events (synchronicities!), and of course some focused action on his part, he ended up earning $92,327 that year. Does that mean it didn’t work? Do you think he really cared about the other $7,673? I’m guessing not, especially since he’s gone on to make hundreds of times that amount since then. :-)

I see a few BIG lessons in his experience:

1) First, choose a goal that is SO MASSIVE that it would impossible to do it all on your own.

2) Believe, believe, believe it’s possible for you.

3) Don’t try to figure out “how” to do it on your own - let the universe help you.

4) Keep your vision alive by imagining that you already have it. Feel good - not “needy.”

5) Don’t worry if it all doesn’t work out *exactly* like you imagine. Most likely you’ll end up with something very close - maybe even better.

Law of Attraction and Therapy - Bad Mix?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Yesterday I got an email from a woman who is currently working through some emotional trauma in therapy, and she came across my Law of Attraction ebook. After learning about the power of thoughts and emotions, she emailed with a heavy question:

Is therapy a bad thing when working with the Law of Attraction?

Does focusing on all those negative emotions attract more negativity into your life?

I’ve been asked that question before and I don’t think I’ve ever addressed it here on this blog. My answer might surprise you.

I am a HUGE FAN of therapy when it’s done in a healing, conscious way.

It’s true that the Law of Attraction is activated by your thoughts, emotions and beliefs. Logically it seems like re-living painful experiences from the past in therapy would bring up “negative” emotions and therefore trigger the LOA to create more painful experiences in your life.

But it doesn’t seem to work that way. At least in my own experience it hasn’t. And I have a good idea why that is.

There’s a big difference in INTENT when you’re working through negative emotions in therapy, or being locked into them in your daily life experiences.

In therapy, you are making a conscious choice to bring up repressed, unexpressed emotions, work through them and release them. You’re coming from a place of power and moving yourself into a place of healing, wholeness and peace.

Compare that to being the victim of negative thoughts and turbulent emotions in an unconscious manner.

Big difference!

When it comes to the Law of Attraction, it’s important to “feel good” but it has to be REAL feeling good. You can’t fake it.

Repressed emotions never die. The harder you try to squash them down the more they’ll keep popping back up when you least expect it and make your life hell. You get locked into a cycle of feeling bad, trying to avoid feeling bad, and then feeling worse because you can’t stop feeling bad! ;-)

On the other hand, if you consciously and purposely work THROUGH heavy emotions, you free yourself from their influence. You process them and let them go. They no longer weigh on your heart and mind.

I spent two years working with a wonderful therapist in the mid-1990’s, and it was the BEST thing I ever did for myself. I was able to work through some childhood issues, emotional blockages, self-doubt and fear that had been holding me back for years.

I still remember at the beginning of my therapy journey, my therapist kept encouraging me to talk about my traumas and pain - and I wanted to avoid talking about them as much as possible! ;-) I kept changing the subject when we got into heavy territory, and she’d gently ease me back to the pain again.

Finally I got mad and demanded, “WHY do you keep making me talk about this stuff? It just makes me sad and I start crying!”

And I’ll never forget her response: “Because there is healing in the telling. The more you talk about it, the more you’ll work through it and eventually it will lose its power over you. These experiences will eventually just become part of your past rather than influencing your present.”

I didn’t believe her at that moment, but she was right. All that talking set me free. I can now think back to those old experiences - or even talk about them - without a hint of tears or sadness. They’re in the past, and that’s where they will remain. I spend most of my time looking forward now. :-)

SO - after that long ramble, my point is that therapy will NOT negatively impact the Law of Attraction in your life. If anything it will HELP because you’ll be releasing underlying emotions and beliefs that constantly work against you!

Amazing things happen when you release the pain and embrace a journey of healing. Don’t be afraid of that; it’s a journey that will change your life.

Create a Happy Day :-)

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Do you tend to let your outer circumstances set the tone for each day? Do you allow other people and events to trigger feelings of anger, frustration, impatience and more?

When you do this, you are not using the power you have available to you! By using the Law of Attraction, you can turn every day into a great day. One way to do that is by using intentions and visualization to create your day.

When you first wake up in the morning, spend 10 minutes or so thinking about the types of things you’d like to experience that day. How would you like your workday to go? What kind of people would you like to meet? Would you like to receive some great opportunities to advance your career or financial situation? How would you like to feel for the majority of your day?

Grab a blank journal or notebook and jot these details down! Once you’ve gotten all the details written down, spend a few minutes vividly imagining each scenario in your mind, exactly as you would like it to happen. Pretend you’re watching a movie in your mind, seeing it all play out exactly as you’d like it to.

Most importantly, allow yourself to feel as if they were actually happening now. Immerse yourself in feelings of excitement, joy, happiness and gratitude as you enjoy one great experience after another. Use this same process for every experience you’d like to have that day.

By the time you’re finished you should be feeling fantastic; buzzing with good spirits and high expectations!

Then continue with your normal routine, taking special care not to be “attached” to any specific events or experiences, just simply staying open to whatever comes. Keep affirming that great things are going to happen to you that day, and you feel great about all of the blessings and abundance in your life.

At the same time, avoid getting entangled in feelings of worry, anxiety, frustration, and anger as much as possible throughout the day because those feelings will interfere with the positive energy you’ve already put out.

As often as you can remember, call to mind images of the things you visualized earlier and allow good feelings to flow over you again. Affirm and know that wonderful things are happening, even if you don’t see them quite yet.

By using this process on a daily basis, you’ll eventually start to notice that good things are starting to happen. You’ll find yourself being in the “right place at the right time” and generally enjoying greater opportunities and abundance.

Whatever else you may do today, be sure to SMILE! :-)

Surrender and Law of Attraction

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

What do you do when you’re extremely unhappy with where you are now and want to use the Law of Attraction to call forth better circumstances?

One bit of common advice given to people in this type of situation is to visualize something better and generate emotions that correspond with peace, abundance, happiness and contentment. This is a good start, but it can be challenging to set aside feelings of dissatisfaction and replace them with happiness - not only does it often seem impossible to do, you usually feel like a faker while you’re doing it! Inside you know that you’re not really happy or content. You’re ticked off that the Law of Attraction doesn’t seem to be working for you, and the longer you go without any results the more ticked off you get. I know, I’ve been there too!

Today I’d like to offer another technique for dealing with frustration: SURRENDER

Surrender to your current life circumstances humbly and gracefully.

What does this mean, exactly?

It means stopping the struggle. Giving up the fight. Awakening to the realization that the more you fight something, the stronger and more pervasive it will become in your life. Fighting is not the way to peace - surrender is.

When you read the word “surrender,” you probably relate it to “defeat” but the two are entirely different. Defeat means you’ve lost the battle; it denotes weakness. Surrender means you’ve chosen not to fight and struggle anymore, and this decision comes from a place of POWER. The power comes from taking ownership of where you are today and knowing that you can create something better in the future - not by fighting and struggling but rather by letting the universe guide you in every step you take. It’s the difference between trying to force something to happen or easing gently into it.

Why would you want to do this? Because the Law of Attraction is activated by your own thoughts and emotions. The more you fight and struggle and complain, the more “negative” stuff you’re attracting into your life! If you instead let go of the struggle, you change the signal you send out - which will improve the results you get.

Okay, so how exactly do you surrender? Here are three ways that always work wonders for me:

1) Find a way to be happy where you are now.

No, not FAKE happiness but genuine peace and acceptance of your current life circumstances. You don’t have to love them, but you do have to be willing to accept them 100% and not feel bitter about it. Whatever situations you wish you could change, adjust them in your own mind so that you can fully accept them and feel grateful for them right now. That may mean stepping back from relationship turmoil, finding new meaning in your work or letting go of your fear of lack. Simply surrender and feel good about where you are right now, no matter what mind-set you must adopt to do it.

2) Envision something better.

Once or twice a day, spend a few minutes visualizing better life circumstances. However, don’t focus on the specific details. This may go against advice you’ve heard before, but I have good reason for suggesting it. Your frustration is caused by the inability to change your situation into what you want it to be. You’ve got a detailed picture in your mind of what would “make you happy,” and you’re not willing to let go of it. But the more you focus on those details, the more dissatisfied you’ll feel when they don’t appear! Instead, hand over the entire situation to the universe and focus instead on how you want to FEEL. Rather than visualizing yourself with a specific job, specific partner or a specific amount of money, imagine having work that makes you feel passionate and fulfilled. Don’t worry about what it will be; just let the universe lead you to it. See yourself happily engaged in a healthy, loving relationship. Don’t put a face or details on this person, just know that he or she is perfect for you in every way. Imagine yourself having a constant flow of abundance and prosperity each day, rather than getting stuck on trying to attract a certain dollar amount.

3) Let go of rigid expectations.

Rather than needing to see results by a specific date or timeframe, let go and let it flow naturally. Let the universe decide when your soulmate, life purpose, abundance and everything else will arrive. This may sound impossible to do because most of us like to feel in control of the “how and when,” but if you’re genuinely working on the two previous steps above it will be quite easy to do.

Does this idea of surrendering frighten you a little bit? Are you afraid to let go because you’ll end up with something you don’t want?

Let me tell you a secret: amazing things can happen when you surrender. According to my own experience, energy logjams are often freed instantly, blockages dissolve, frustration melts away and peace comes flooding in to take its place.

Even better, this state of surrender creates an opening for inspiration and insight to enter. When you free your mind from all the “gotta, wanna, can’t, why isn’t it working?!!!” noise, you suddenly see a whole new world of possibilities you missed when you were so busy trying to force events to go your way.

As strongly as you may feel you know what is best for you, be willing to consider that the universe has something even better in mind. You might be so focused on trying to call forth a penny that you don’t notice the universe trying to hand you the key to the Universal Vault of Immense Abundance and Joy!

Surrender is that key, and it can change your life if you let it. ;-)

Self-Love and Source Energy

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Today’s Abe-Hicks daily quote is simple yet oh-so-true!

Appreciation and self-love are the most important tools that you could ever nurture. Appreciation of others, and the appreciation of yourself is the closest vibrational match to your Source Energy of anything that we’ve ever witnessed anywhere in the Universe. Excerpted from a workshop in Spokane, WA on Tuesday, May 30th, 2000

Of course, it’s not always easy to focus on self-love! Here are a few quick tips on ways to love yourself today and beyond:

1) Romance yourself.

Think about the last love affair you had. At the beginning you and your partner probably devoted a lot of time, attention and affection to each other, right? You felt passionate and swept away by the beauty of your partner and he/she probably felt the same about you. One of the best ways to learn to love yourself is to enter into a similar process – with yourself! Treat yourself like royalty! Do things that make you feel happy. Hug yourself. Sweet-talk yourself. Buy yourself nice things. Spend quality time with yourself simply because you deserve it.

2) Explore your existing beliefs.

You may suspect you have old, limiting messages rattling around in your head but still be unsure about what they are exactly. In order to discover the beliefs that are holding you back, you may need to go on an expedition. Begin exploring your existing beliefs by writing in a journal. Give yourself prompts or questions like these:

“My earliest memory of feeling inadequate was . . .”
“My mother always made me feel . . .”
“My father always treated me like . . .”

The idea is to think back to an earlier time in your life and see if you can discover when and where your limiting beliefs got started. Then, challenge those beliefs. Are they still true? Were they ever true? Decide what you WANT to be true, and begin to replace the old belief by focusing more on your new and improved beliefs.

3) Emphasize your good qualities!

When you have low self-esteem, you tend to keep focusing on the things that are “wrong with you,” and dismissing the things that you have going for you. Turn this around by praising and encouraging yourself in your self-talk. When you accomplish something, congratulate yourself! Say things like, “Wow, I’m really proud of myself for doing that. It wasn’t easy, but I pushed through the rough spots and gave it my best shot.” You can also make a point of simply giving yourself positive self-talk daily. Recite affirmations like these: “I am a valuable person. I have a lot to offer the world. I’m talented and successful.” The more you do it, the more you’ll come to believe it!

Weed Your Mind

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Weeds in a garden can be incredibly pesky, persistent and destructive to the plants you do want to cultivate. Any good gardener knows that frequent weeding is necessary if you want to keep a clear area for healthy plants to grow to their fullest potential. How similar this process is to the role of positive thinking in personal development! Just like a garden, your mind can easily and quickly become overrun by “weeds” in the form of negativity, impatience, jealousy, anger or inflexibility.

You may think these types of thoughts aren’t truly harmful, just perhaps a bit annoying. Wrong! Remember, what you focus upon the most is what you tend to create in your life. While most of us have fleeting moments of negative thinking now and again, the length and frequency of time you focus on these thoughts determines whether they will sprout roots and grow into something larger and much more troublesome. What kind of trouble can negative thoughts create in your mind? How about feelings of depression, defeatism, inability to recognize opportunities, hopelessness, resistance to positive change, confusion, lack of focus, lack of direction and purpose, and much, much more. Even worse, negative thoughts (just like weeds) are incredibly prolific. They multiply and take over the whole darn joint if you let them. They invite all their rowdy, boisterous friends and begin to bully and crowd out the positive thoughts you are trying to encourage to take root.

If you want to keep your mind (and life) free from interfering “weeds,” you must learn to pluck out the ones that prevent the better growth from happening. That means letting go of grudges, not letting yourself be overcome by anger or frustration, and learning how to find the good in every situation. You must learn how to cultivate only that which you want to harvest in your life. You will reap what you sow, but remember too that sometimes other people are gardening on your land without your conscious awareness or permission. Don’t let them! Put up an electric fence and be clear about what you will and will not accept into your lush garden.

Be vigilant about weeding your mind daily, and you will ensure that only beauty, joy and abundance grow there.

You must weed your mind as you would weed your garden. - Astrid Alauda
