Law of Attraction and Therapy - Bad Mix?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Yesterday I got an email from a woman who is currently working through some emotional trauma in therapy, and she came across my Law of Attraction ebook. After learning about the power of thoughts and emotions, she emailed with a heavy question:

Is therapy a bad thing when working with the Law of Attraction?

Does focusing on all those negative emotions attract more negativity into your life?

I’ve been asked that question before and I don’t think I’ve ever addressed it here on this blog. My answer might surprise you.

I am a HUGE FAN of therapy when it’s done in a healing, conscious way.

It’s true that the Law of Attraction is activated by your thoughts, emotions and beliefs. Logically it seems like re-living painful experiences from the past in therapy would bring up “negative” emotions and therefore trigger the LOA to create more painful experiences in your life.

But it doesn’t seem to work that way. At least in my own experience it hasn’t. And I have a good idea why that is.

There’s a big difference in INTENT when you’re working through negative emotions in therapy, or being locked into them in your daily life experiences.

In therapy, you are making a conscious choice to bring up repressed, unexpressed emotions, work through them and release them. You’re coming from a place of power and moving yourself into a place of healing, wholeness and peace.

Compare that to being the victim of negative thoughts and turbulent emotions in an unconscious manner.

Big difference!

When it comes to the Law of Attraction, it’s important to “feel good” but it has to be REAL feeling good. You can’t fake it.

Repressed emotions never die. The harder you try to squash them down the more they’ll keep popping back up when you least expect it and make your life hell. You get locked into a cycle of feeling bad, trying to avoid feeling bad, and then feeling worse because you can’t stop feeling bad! ;-)

On the other hand, if you consciously and purposely work THROUGH heavy emotions, you free yourself from their influence. You process them and let them go. They no longer weigh on your heart and mind.

I spent two years working with a wonderful therapist in the mid-1990’s, and it was the BEST thing I ever did for myself. I was able to work through some childhood issues, emotional blockages, self-doubt and fear that had been holding me back for years.

I still remember at the beginning of my therapy journey, my therapist kept encouraging me to talk about my traumas and pain - and I wanted to avoid talking about them as much as possible! ;-) I kept changing the subject when we got into heavy territory, and she’d gently ease me back to the pain again.

Finally I got mad and demanded, “WHY do you keep making me talk about this stuff? It just makes me sad and I start crying!”

And I’ll never forget her response: “Because there is healing in the telling. The more you talk about it, the more you’ll work through it and eventually it will lose its power over you. These experiences will eventually just become part of your past rather than influencing your present.”

I didn’t believe her at that moment, but she was right. All that talking set me free. I can now think back to those old experiences - or even talk about them - without a hint of tears or sadness. They’re in the past, and that’s where they will remain. I spend most of my time looking forward now. :-)

SO - after that long ramble, my point is that therapy will NOT negatively impact the Law of Attraction in your life. If anything it will HELP because you’ll be releasing underlying emotions and beliefs that constantly work against you!

Amazing things happen when you release the pain and embrace a journey of healing. Don’t be afraid of that; it’s a journey that will change your life.
