A New Earth: Eckhart Tolle

Posted at 8:15 am under Passion & Purpose, Spirituality

By now you’ve probably heard about this book and Oprah’s online class with the author. But I figured I’d mention it in case you’ve been hiding in a cave. :-)

I’ve been reading this book slowly, and it’s fantastic. The way I ended up reading it is funny because I really had no interest in it from the beginning. I didn’t feel any compulsion to read it or take the class. But over the next few weeks I started to get the distinct feeling that I was being prodded to read it because it kept popping up at me wherever I went, both online and off. Still, I kept ignoring those prompts because I didn’t feel that spark of interest.

Then one day I visited my local Borders bookstore for a few books on unrelated topics. What did I see when I first walk in the door? A big display of Tolle’s book.

Stubbornly, I walked past the display and browsed through another section. Once I found the books I wanted, I turned around and began heading toward the checkout counter – and nearly knocked over ANOTHER display of these books!

*SIGH* I know when the universe is trying to tell me to do something. :-)

Admitting defeat, I added one of the books to the stack I was carrying and continued to the checkout.

Even after I got the book home, I had to push myself to begin reading it. I had a hard time concentrating on it at first but by the time I was a few pages in, I was captivated. It’s very, very good.

What is it about? As the title claims, it’s about awakening to your life’s purpose, but it goes much deeper than that. It’s about transcending the ego mind and living from Presence. The essence of who you are. Spiritual consciousness.

It’s not for everyone. In fact, Tolle says as much at the beginning of the book:

“…This book itself is a transformational device that has come out of the arising new consciousness. The ideas and concepts presented here may be important, but they are secondary. They are no more than signposts pointing toward awakening. As you read, a shift takes place within you. This book’s main purpose is not to add new information or beliefs to your mind or to try to convince you of anything, but to bring about a shift in consciousness, that is to say, to awaken.

In that sense, this book is not ‘interesting.’ Interesting means you can keep your distance, play around with ideas and concepts in your mind, agree or disagree. This book is about you. It will change your state of consciousness or it will be meaningless. It can only awaken those who are ready. Not everyone is ready yet, but many are…”

I guess I was ready because I have definitely felt a shift taking place within me as I read the book. Much of it echoes things I’ve learned over the past 15+ years in my spiritual studies, but some of it is new to me too. I think this book is going to make a positive difference in the world. But even on a smaller scale, it can help you to feel more peaceful and happy in your own life too.

You can read more about the book or buy it here, and you can sign up for the free web class at Oprah.com. The class starts tonight and will run live every Monday at 9pm EST, but even if you can’t attend at that time you’ll be able to play the video web casts whenever you like. I’m looking forward to it, maybe I’ll see you there? :-)

P.S. What did you think of Oprah’s Big Give show last night? I thought it was pretty good, I definitely shed a few tears. But I also think it will get a lot better as the contestants get more comfortable giving big. They were just getting their feet wet. :-)
