Frustrated that everything costs money

I got an email today from a man who’s subscribed to my Prosperity Tips & Affirmations Ezine, and he was frustrated because it seems like everyone is charging money for their books and products. He’s going through some rough times financially, so he feels a bit disillusioned about the Law of Attraction and so many products costing money.

This brings up some great points about money and energy exchanges related to abundance and prosperity, so I’m copying my response to him below:

I’m glad you’re enjoying the emails so far, I truly love writing them. I understand how you feel about people constantly promoting their books and other products, it’s frustrating at times. Since I also sell my own books I might not be the best person to answer your question! LOL :-) But I want to share something with you that I think can make a big difference in your own level of prosperity.

And that is: always try to appreciate the contributions that others make to you in the form of products and services. Rather than feeling disillusioned because people are selling products, be happy for them and develop a genuine sense of appreciation for their contributions. That goes for products like books that you buy and read, but also for the services you use in your day to day life like electricity, running water, rent or mortgage, etc.

That doesn’t mean you have to buy anything unless you really have a need for it or want it, of course. But what I mean is, don’t resent the people for selling them in the first place. When it comes right down to it, sales transactions are nothing more than an exchange of energy. A product creator invests their energy, time and knowledge into the product and offers it to the customer. The customer then offers their own energy back in the form of money. It’s an even exchange that benefits both parties.

If everything was offered for free it would create a huge energy imbalance. In fact, that’s exactly what happened to me. I started my first website in early 2000, and I gave away everything for free because I really wanted to help people. I still give away plenty for free because I really enjoy doing so. But after several years of that, I found myself having some serious problems. First, I had a lot of financial blockages and struggled to pay the hosting and domain fees for the website so it kept going down when I was unable to pay. Since I also had to pay my bills and living expenses, I was forced to work long hours at my job to cover everything, which meant I had less time and energy available to really help others like I wanted to.

Finally I realized that if I truly wanted to help people, I had to stop giving away everything for free and offer a way for greater balance to be achieved. That meant creating products and charging money for them. Yes, some people didn’t like it at all; they felt like I was trying to rip them off or all I cared about was their money - despite me giving them nothing but free information for 6+ years! :-) But others were thrilled for an opportunity to give back to me for helping them. It all balances out.

SO - my point is, understand that the people who are selling products and services are doing so for a good reason. If everything was offered for free, they would be forced to make money some other way, which means they would have less time/energy/resources to offer people.

A very good way to attract more abundance into your own life is to start feeling appreciation for the companies and individuals who provide their products and services to you! For example, when you pay your bills, take a few moments to think about how wonderful it is to have a roof over your head and give thanks to your landlord or mortgage company. Do the same when you pay the electric bill, cable, car payment, etc.

Find a way to feel good about the money you send out, and you will encourage more to flow in! It really does work.

Finally, I want to offer one more insight. Take some time to think about how you would feel about the monetary exchanges if you already had plenty of money at your disposal. If you had a million dollars in the bank, would you be upset about someone charging money for their products? Probably not. Instead you would consider whether you needed it or not, and not focus on the money part of it at all.

That might seem like a big “duh” - but I want you to really think about that because I think the source of your resentment is not that these products cost money — but that you feel you can’t get the help and guidance you need if you don’t have the money to pay for it. Right? (That’s just my perception based on your email; only you know the true answer.)

There are so many possibilities that you can’t even see right now, but they will begin to appear as you begin to change your perception.

Whatever you “send out” in thoughts, words and actions will come back to you in some form. That sounds ominous but it can also be amazing! :-)

[...] Frustrated That Everything Costs Money:  Do you remember a few weeks ago when I got an email from a man who wanted my advice on how to deal with a woman friend of his?  And how he thought my coaching fee was outrageously out of reach for him?  Well, I wish I had read Wendy from Creation Thoughts’s post on how to respond to that.  She describes receiving a similar email from a man who chided her for charging money for her services.  She cut and pasted a copy of her email response for her readers.  I thought it was brilliant, loving and very inspiring.  I even printed a copy of it so that I’ll know how to respond the next time someone chides me for charging money for my coaching services.   Thanks Wendy for inspiring me with such a brilliant post! Great post. One concept I share with my clients and try to live by is to evaluate how we would respond to the cost of goods and services if we truly believed in limitless prosperity. For example, I no long ask the question “If money were no object…?” I now declare “As money is no object…” As you suggest in your own way, Wendy, it’s great way to remove our fear and scarcity consciousness from all spending decisions. BTW, you might enjoy this take on limitless prosperity:http://markdavidgerson.blogspot.com/2008/03/infinite-possibility-infinite-flow.html

Thank you Stephen and Mark! :-)

I’ve just left longer comments at each of your blogs so I won’t repeat them here. Just thanks for your comments and wonderful insights. :-)
