By setting an intention to expand your awareness of what you really want, you energize it into being.
Try this exercise:
Think of something you want very much. Take a blank sheet of paper and a pen, and write, “I KNOW that _________ (your object or experience) is present in my life right now, and I choose to expand my awareness of it.”
Examples:
“I KNOW that great abundance is present in my life right now, and I choose to expand my awareness of it.”
“I KNOW that perfect health is present in my life right now, and I choose to expand my awareness of it.”
“I KNOW that a healthy, loving relationship is present in my life right now, and I choose to expand my awareness of it.”
Write your statement over and over and state it aloud as often as possible, letting your conviction build as you do.
In short order the Universe will shrug and say, “Okay, if that’s what you really want.”

I was just reading Jeannette Maw’s Good Vibe blog and she has a great post, The “Truth” About Affirmations.
Do they work or not work?
Well, both!
In my lifetime, I have recited many thousands of affirmations. Some of them I only used once. Some of them have become a permanent part of my mental chatter. Can you guess which ones came true?
Jeannette cites some great examples on the power of beliefs, and I agree that we can convince ourselves that virtually anything is true.
When I was a child, I would occasionally spend the night at my grandparents’ house, along with my younger brother. My grandparents lived about a half mile from a busy highway, so all through the night you could hear tractor trailer trucks and other traffic passing by. However, because it was in the distance it sounded like a strange roaring.
Not knowing what the sound was, I finally asked my grandmother and she told my brother and I that a big dragon lived under the ground in her backyard. At night, she said, he would open a trap door and come up to the earth’s surface, looking for food (we imagined, wide-eyed, that this “food” might be small children, even though she didn’t exactly say so).
For years after that, I was afraid to go into my grandmother’s backyard - especially when it started getting toward dusk.
Okay, you’re thinking, “Yeah, but you were a kid. Kids will believe almost anything.”
Hang on, it gets better.
Years later, my grandmother and I were laughing over that old story and how it scared the pants off my brother and I, and she shared something funny with me.
Later that same night when she told my brother and I about the dragon, she put us to bed and then went to get ready for bed herself. She went into the bathroom which faced the backyard, and while she was in there she heard a scraping sound on the window screen outside. The hair on the back of her neck stood up and she felt really frightened - and exited the bathroom in a hurry!
It’s not just kids who will believe almost anything. If you create something in your mind and make it vivid enough - you can convince yourself it’s true. No, of course Grammy didn’t REALLY believe there was a dragon in her backyard, but her mind sure started running away with the possibility - which made her feet run out of the bathroom. LOL
As funny as that story is, it really demonstrates the power of the mind. That dragon is a perfect example of our negative thoughts, limiting beliefs and self-doubt.
The good news is that this same power of the mind can help us to be more confident, successful, prosperous and happy. Like all powers, it can be used for good or ill.
It’s all in what we choose to believe is true. What do you want to be true in your own life? Turn it into a vivid storyline and keep telling it to yourself. It works.
In case you missed it, I recently posted a list of 101 Power Affirmations that you can use. They’re a good start, but feel free to alter them to suit your own needs better.
If you prefer to write your own affirmations from scratch, I have a few good articles on how to do it:
You’ve got all the tools you need to write the greatest story of your life - your life IS the story.

There are plenty of differing opinions on the right and wrong ways to write effective affirmations, but the bottom line is that an affirmation can be considered effective if it works for YOU! I got an email from a woman asking:
How do you use affirmations to win the lottery and contests?
That’s an excellent question! First, understand that affirmations don’t hold any power themselves - they can’t magically attract money or lottery wins or anything else on their own.
The true power of affirmations is their ability to shift you into a specific mental and emotional state that is in alignment with abundance, prosperity and good fortune. Remember, your thoughts, beliefs, expectations and emotions all combine to create your energetic “frequency,” which is the signal you send out to the universe and attract corresponding experiences.
Just reciting affirmations won’t change anything unless you consciously SHIFT yourself into a state of high energy while you say them. Whatever you’re trying to attract through affirmations, you have to get into the FEELINGS of already having it!
So if you want to attract lottery and contest wins, move yourself into the feeling state of receiving them. Strong excitement, joy, fun, gratitude and so on - let these emotions take over your entire mind and body as you recite your affirmations. Mentally see yourself winning and feeling wonderful about it!
Here are some sample affirmations you can use (but feel free to alter them to better suit your own intentions!):
“I am the luckiest person on the planet!”
“I am always in the right place at the right time!”
“I LOVE winning contests and lottery drawings!”
“This is so much FUN!”
“The universe is always sending wonderful things my way!”
“Somehow I always come out ahead!”
“I am open to all of the abundance and fun the universe sends my way!”
Let me know how they work for you!

We’ve heard it over and over again: thoughts create reality. Yes, thoughts are very powerful. Thoughts inspire emotions, which create raw energy in the form of your intent. This energy then becomes physical form or experience.
But there’s one more key ingredient that many people leave out when working with the Law of Attraction: the power of your word.
Reality exists in varying states of vibration. Our physical realm vibrates on a lower frequency than our mental realm, which vibrates much faster. Our thoughts are a part of this realm, with a much higher frequency of vibration than physical reality. Our bodies are part of the denser, slower-vibrating physical plane. Yet, somehow, we are able to create our desires in the higher frequency and bring it into manifestation in the physical.
The spoken word is a very unique device. More powerful than a magic wand, our word is in fact the most powerful magickal tool available to us!
You may find that hard to believe, but think about it. Look at the world around you – all the trouble, strife, war, and greed caused by miscommunication.
Why are words so powerful?
Your word is the direct connection between your thought (higher-vibrational planes) and your body (lower-vibrational physical plane). When you speak, you are bringing your thoughts out directly into the physical in the form of sound waves. Those sound waves are “charged” with the intent behind them. Sound is energy – so this charged energy is immediately active in the physical plane!
When you say something, you release physical energy charged with your intent.
Compare this process to visualization: When you visualize, you charge higher energy and give it the intent to manifest, but it does not immediately take physical form.
Intentions through spoken words DO!
This intent-charged energy is now already vibrating in the physical sphere. This energy will manifest far more quickly than visualized energy! In many cases it can even manifest almost immediately.
If you want to use the Law of Attraction more consciously, you need to become aware of the true power of your words.
When you speak, you are not just expressing yourself outwardly. You are actually creating with energy! If you think about it, “expressing yourself outwardly” basically means just that – the expression of your “inner” into your “outer”. In fact, there are tons of clues like that in the language we use every day. We usually don’t catch them simply because we aren’t paying attention. Now you know!
So, here is your assignment for today:
Think of something you want, and verbalize it as if you already had it. Like this:
I now have a life of peacefulness and joy.
I now have abundant wealth and financial independence.
I now have a loving, harmonious relationship.
Or if you want to boost your results even further, add gratitude!
I’m so grateful I now have a life of peacefulness and joy!
I’m so grateful I now have abundant wealth and financial independence.
I’m so grateful I now have a loving, harmonious relationship.
Whatever you desire, speak it and create it.

You may have heard that you should always use present tense when you say affirmations or intentions. So instead of saying, “I will attract amazing opportunities today,” you should word it, “I am attracting amazing opportunities today,” or “I always attract amazing opportunities.”
Is this really important? Does tense matter?
Personally, I think it matters only if YOU think it matters. How’s that for a vague answer? LOL
Here’s why I think that:
When you recite an affirmation or state an intention, you are injecting your own unique beliefs and expectations into the mix. The words themselves don’t really matter - except that they put a specific picture in your mind and set you up for a specific expectation.
So the short answer would be, word them in a way that makes it easier for you to believe them.
Some people really do find it helpful to put them in present tense. Some people find it helpful to word them in a way that emphasizes a process instead of an end result. (Like, “I am becoming stronger and healthier every day.”)
If that works for you, go for it! If not, don’t feel that you have to do it that way.
Personally, I use future tense in my affirmations and intentions all the time and they still work fine. I’ll say things like, “Today I will remember to be alert to great opportunities that cross my path,” or “Today I will attract massive abundance in all forms,” and so on.
The bottom line is, whatever you believe and expect to see is what you’ll get - no matter how you word it.

What is abundance? Most people think of money when they hear the word “abundance,” but that’s not the only expression of abundance. The dictionary defines abundance as: more than enough; amply sufficient.
This can apply to money, no doubt about it. But it also applies to every other area of your life. In fact, some people would argue that having an abundance of money and lack everywhere else will make you miserable.
What does abundance mean to you? What would you consider to be “more than enough” or “amply sufficient”? How would you like your life to change from what it is now? What do you want your relationships to look like? Your health and well-being? Your career? Your financial situation?
Get a clear idea of ALL of these things before you start trying to attract more. Clarity is important because when you are very clear about what you want, you will find it much easier to attract!
Otherwise it’s like walking into a restaurant and saying, “I’m hungry. Feed me.” Your server needs to know WHAT you want to eat.
Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want in all areas of your life, craft some simple affirmations that you can begin saying on a regular basis. Here are some good examples:
- I effortlessly attract plenty of customers for my business.
- My relationships are growing deeper and richer every day.
- I love my life, and live with passion and joy.
- My body is transforming into a picture of total health and wellness.
- I always have more than enough money for everything I need.
- The universe is always guiding me to my highest good.
Now, just saying the words is a good start, but it’s also very important that you begin to BELIEVE them. Affirmations can be very powerful but first you’ve got to get past your own limiting beliefs!
I’ve got a free e-book that goes into a lot more details about this, and I also highly recommend Why Most Affirmations Fail by Jennifer Shepherd.
Once you understand how affirmations really work on your mind, you can make huge progress on overcoming inner blockages to wealth – no matter in which form you want that “wealth” to arrive!

Affirmations can be a powerful tool in your personal development program, but only if they are used correctly. If you’re like most people, you’ve been taught one part of the equation: reciting the words. Consistently changing your thoughts and words from negative to positive is a great first step because it helps you build a solid foundation for long-term growth. However, this approach alone may not bring about the change you desire.
No matter how specific and focused your affirmations are, reciting them dispassionately will be about as effective as reading a breakfeast cereal box each morning. You are engaging your mind, not your emotions. If you want to add power to your affirmations in a big way, you need to include one simple ingredient: EMOTION.
Emotion is the fuel that propels your intentions into being. As you recite empowering words and infuse them with strong emotion, you are in effect stepping into a new “reality” where your desire is a FACT. This alters the vibrations you’re emitting to the universe, and the universe responds by sending you experiences that match your vibrational signal.
However, any old emotion won’t work. Many self-help gurus will tell you to get excited and enthusiastic when you recite affirmations, and that technique does have its merits. But it’s infinitely more powerful to choose the RIGHT emotion for what you’re trying to attract, and place it squarely on the CORRECT part of your affirmation.
Let’s use an example to demonstrate the process. If you want to attract more money into your life, one effective affirmation would be:
“I always have more than enough money for everything I need.”
Which emotions would add power to this affirmation? Excitement? Enthusiasm? Happiness? Yes, those are good, but think for a moment how you would FEEL if such a statement were true. If you were able to wave a magic wand over your life and manifest a ton of money that eradicated any and all financial worries forever, how would you feel? Happy and excited, certainly. But once the intial excitement wore off, what would your mind-set be like?
I don’t know about you, but if that statement were true for me, I’d feel calm, secure, grateful, free and relieved. Worries about money would no longer exist in my reality. I would have no anxiety or stress. I’d feel very grounded and calm about my financial situation.
Do you see the direction your thoughts need to take to make this a powerful affirmation? You need to focus on the HAVING, not the NEEDING. If your affirmations are more like “begging sessions” where you are beseeching the universe to help you, you are only attracting more situations in which you need to beg for assistance!
You have to shift your mind-set so you are in effect stepping into a new reality, a reality in which you already have what you desire, a reality where financial worries (or other troublesome issues) don’t exist for you. As you keep reinforcing this truth in your mind, you can’t help but attract the corresponding reality!
So, if you previously gave up on affirmations because they don’t seem to work for you, give this technique a try. It can be a tricky feat at the beginning because you have to learn to turn your attention away from what you perceive to be your current reality and focus more on the reality you want to attract. But with consistent practice you should find yourself easily able to transition from where you are, to where you want to be.
P.S. I recently put the finishing touches on a short and sweet e-book titled, “Using Affirmations for Positive Change”, and I’m giving it away f-r-e-e. If you’ve had trouble making affirmations work for you in the past, this book will give you some effective techniques that can change everything. Learn three qualities affirmations should always have, what your current circumstances reveal about your thought patterns, how to change limiting beliefs with affirmations, one little word that can increase the effectiveness of your affirmations, one emotion that can boost the power of your affirmations, common affirmation mistakes and much more!
