3 Reasons The Secret Isn’t “Working For You”

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

By Pete Koerner

The Secret, or The Law of Attraction, isn’t “magic.” It isn’t really even a “thing.” The Law of Attraction is simply a way of talking about or describing how things seem to come together, or manifest into form from the world of the un-formed. The Law of Attraction is a law, not a tool; it isn’t something that works sometimes, or for some people, and not other times, or for other people. If you don’t think the Law of Attraction is working for you, it is almost certainly because the Law has brought you grief, loss, suffering, debt, unhappiness, or some other misfortune instead of something you think would be “better.” The Law is “working” perfectly.

As they say, “Ignorance of the Law does not excuse you from the operation of the Law.” You might think you can watch negative things on television (news, crime dramas, etc…) and have a positive life; but you can’t. You might think you can eat whatever you want, not exercise, and spend your time griping about your life and how you look in the mirror without creating something you don’t want; but you can’t. The Law of Attraction simply says that, if you have a recipe and ingredients for a chocolate cake, and then you assemble those ingredients and apply energy, or heat, then you’ll naturally end up with a chocolate cake - not a cherry pie. In life, we have plans, thoughts, and beliefs; and we have faith and action. Of course, all of this starts with the desire and idea to make a chocolate cake; and knowing the recipe, or having the ingredients on hand, are not always enough. And, sometimes, before we have had a chance to create the cake with our hands, someone might bring us a cake. But it all starts with desire.

If The Secret isn’t working for you, consider that you are simply attracting a different level of experience than you want to be — not that the Law of Attraction doesn’t work. When people do that, they get bitter; and then, they attract even worse experiences into their lives and say, “See! I told you the Secret was ‘bogus!’ Now I’m even more miserable than before!” If you really want to start attracting better things into your life, consider changing one or all of the following three things:

1.) Do whatever you can to spend more of the day thinking “positive” than “negative.” This means turning off the news and no longer reading the newspaper, for starters. Also, programming (books, television, etc…) with violence, meanness, fear, or other negativity, literally causes you to be negative and stressed; and the stress response causes premature aging, suppressed immunity, weight gain, and all manner of illness and unhappiness. I have had dreams that took 20-years to come true; be patient and be positive. If it isn’t working fast enough, add to the equation by doing more.

2.) Focus your thoughts; and concentrate on what you want — not what’s missing in your life, or what’s wrong with the world. If you spend your time thinking about negative things, you’ll experience negative things; and, if you spend your time thinking about a bunch of different things, you’ll get a bunch of different things — not necessarily the ONE thing you want. Eliminate negativity and distractions from your life — leaving more time for you to think positively about what you want.

3.) Do Something Different; anything will do. You can’t complain about how your life is not changing when you continue doing and thinking the same things. Carefully and honestly consider changes you need to make in your life — and then make them. Albert Einstein said that, “Nothing happens until something moves;” I say, “Nothing different happens until someone moves differently.”

The Law of Attraction is always on; constantly pulling things together and pulling them apart — but always pulling, and always according to our thoughts. Change is constant; if you want to participate, simply start thinking about what you want — and work on being positive. And, just remember, if you can’t seem to attract what you want in life:

1.) Turn that frown upside down; and Keep it Positive.

2.) Focus on one thing at a time; concentrate your energies on your desires.

3.) Do something new and different; mix things up and you will have change.

They say, “If you want to know what you’ve been asking for, just take a look around at what you’ve got;” to change what you see, change what you’re asking for, and change the way you’re asking. Then, do something new!

Law of Attraction Success Stories

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Just wanted to share a fabulous treasure with you! The Secret website has a section of success stories from people who have used the Law of Attraction to change their lives.

The last time I was there they had only a handful of stories, but now they have HUNDREDS! There are stories about people attracting sums of money both big and small, as well as improving or growing their business, relationships, health - even stories about the power of gratitude, successful goal setting, and much more.

Very inspiring! Once I got in there and started reading, I had to forcefully pull myself away. LOL :-)

Check it out:

I was just browsing through some videos at YouTube and saw this one from the Secret. It’s short, but still inspiring - and it goes along with our previous discussion about attracting prosperity, so there you go! :-)

Here’s another one that doesn’t focus on money necessarily, just overall abundance and joy. Very uplifting! :-)

Power of Positive Audio!

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Sorry for my inactivity lately; don’t worry - I haven’t been eaten by bears! :-)

I’ve been swamped with another new project, but I’m making fantastic progress and hope to be finished with it soon. Then I’ll immediately start on another one. LOL!

Anyway, I wanted to mention something great that has been happening to me lately, and that is the power of repetitive audio!

I finally broke down and bought an MP3 player for myself (yes, I’m probably the last person in the free world to do so; I’m usually a few years behind most people technology-wise :-) ).

But I am LOVING this little gadget! I’ve been taking it with me everywhere - while I’m driving, while I’m shopping, while I’m doing housework or yard work, and pretty much all the time except when I’m working and need to focus.

I’ve got some favorite audios I’ve been listening to, such as:

- The Secret audio book

- Louise Hay’s audio book “The Power is Within You”

- My own Emotional Radiance Meditation

- Joe Vitale’s Clearing Audio

- Reiki Whale Dreaming by Kamal (whale songs w/music for meditation)

- Tibetan Chakra Meditations by Ben Scott & Christa Michell

I still haven’t downloaded much actual music, but I plan to.

All of this positive audio input is having a great effect on me! I’m not much of an audio person - or least I never used to be. Sometimes I like listening to music and I do often listen to meditation CDs, but more often I tend to prefer silence over background noise. I have sensitive ears and too much noise makes me feel like every nerve ending in my body is being aggravated.

But I’m discovering that the right KIND of noise (or sounds, I should say) is a different story! Listening to all these wise voices like the teachers in the Secret, Rhonda Byrne (who narrates her audio book), Louise Hay, and also the selected meditation music I’ve got so far - is . . . incredibly . . . uplifting. Talk about a constant infusion of positive thoughts and emotions! I should have done this long ago.

In case you’re interested, I got my MP3 player from QVC.com. It’s the Sansa 2GB, which holds up to 500 songs. Not a huge device by any means, and not at all expensive! (It was around $45)

And to my absolute joy, I also discovered that Amazon.com offers MP3 downloads! Mostly music, but there are also many New Age selections like meditations and such. Better still, you can buy the songs individually for .89 cents or so, or whole albums for $6 to $12. Very cool!

P.S. If anyone knows of other good audio-download sources, please let me know!

Go BIGGER With Your Manifestations

Monday, February 25th, 2008

You hear it all the time, “start small, attract a cup of coffee.” I’ve even said it myself, and it can work if you’re feeling overwhelmed about using the Law of Attraction. We’re used to thinking of smaller things being easier to achieve.

But sometimes that focus can backfire too, because smaller isn’t always easier - especially when it comes to the Law of Attraction!

One of the problems with “small” manifestations is that you really don’t care about them one way or the other. As we all know, the Law of Attraction is activated by your thoughts, emotions and beliefs. How much emotion can you generate over a cup of coffee? Little emotion = low energy.

Personally I love coffee, so I can definitely feel emotional over it. LOL :-) But, do I need to manifest it? No. I’ve got some right in my cupboard; I can make a pot whenever I want.

I’m not trying to pick on this popular advice because the coffee isn’t the point, I know that.

But I want to offer some alternative advice for people who can’t seem to manifest a cup of coffee, a blue feather, or whatever other small thing they’re focusing on: GO BIGGER.

On page 95 of The Secret, Jack Canfield shares how he spent most of his early life feeling limited and focused on lack. He says, “It was only when I met W. Clement Stone that I began to shift my life. When I was working with Stone he said, ‘I want you to set a goal that’s so big that if you achieved it, it would blow your mind, and you would know it’s only because of what I’ve taught you that you would have achieved this goal.’”

Canfield went on to set a goal of earning $100,000 in a year - quite a huge jump from his existing $8,000 yearly income!

According to Stone’s instructions, he spent time each day visualizing his goal already achieved. He made a fake $100,000 bill and stuck it to the ceiling over his bed so it was the first thing he saw each morning upon waking. Whenever he saw that bill, he visualized having a $100,000 a year lifestyle.

Through a few strange, nearly miraculous events (synchronicities!), and of course some focused action on his part, he ended up earning $92,327 that year. Does that mean it didn’t work? Do you think he really cared about the other $7,673? I’m guessing not, especially since he’s gone on to make hundreds of times that amount since then. :-)

I see a few BIG lessons in his experience:

1) First, choose a goal that is SO MASSIVE that it would impossible to do it all on your own.

2) Believe, believe, believe it’s possible for you.

3) Don’t try to figure out “how” to do it on your own - let the universe help you.

4) Keep your vision alive by imagining that you already have it. Feel good - not “needy.”

5) Don’t worry if it all doesn’t work out *exactly* like you imagine. Most likely you’ll end up with something very close - maybe even better.

Law of Attraction, The Secret and Wealth

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

In my travels around the web this morning, I stumbled across an article that contained a negative review of the February 8th Oprah show about The Secret.

The author asks: “Is The Secret just about getting money, losing weight, having better sex or finding your “soul-mate?” While I was watching the February 8th Oprah Show I received an email that said it was a shame that The Secret was all about getting money. The emailer was looking for a more “meditative experience” and was disappointed.”

This is a common argument that I’ve seen and heard repeatedly since The Secret’s debut. It does raise a valid point: that money isn’t everything and doesn’t necessarily guarantee happiness. With that, I can agree.

But at the same time, a question always comes to my mind when I see these types of arguments: “What’s WRONG with having MONEY?”

There are two basic points I want to cover regarding this topic today:

1) “The Secret” is NOT all about money, sex and losing weight. Anyone who has seen the movie might recall mention of abundant health and wellness, the importance of gratitude, and the choice to feel good as often as possible. Regardless of our financial status, sex life or body weight, focusing on being healthy and happy can drastically improve our quality of life!

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t believe that it only covers money and material possessions. It’s a guide to creating more happiness and joy in your life, and that can certainly include more money, a better job and a thinner body.

2) Negative comments about money and possessions usually reveal one thing about the commenter: the belief that there is something wrong with being wealthy or prosperous.

Like many others, I was raised to believe that I didn’t need much. If I had a steady job and was making enough to get by, then I was doing good, and that’s all I should expect.

Thankfully, I’ve altered that belief. I decided I wanted to do more than “get by”. I wanted to create a life of ease and comfort for myself and my loved ones. I wanted the freedom to spend my days doing something I love, rather than trading hours for dollars at a job I didn’t like.

And as I’ve written many times before, when your core beliefs change, so do your external circumstances! :-)

Here’s another way to look at it. Ask yourself what you believe your life purpose to be, and which circumstances would allow you to fulfill that purpose in the best and most effective way.

In my situation, I know I’m here to write and share my words with others. Could I still do that if I was living in a cardboard box under a bridge? Sure! I don’t need money to share my words with others. Well, except that I wouldn’t be able to afford a computer, or an internet connection. If I tried to share my words with others in print rather than online, I’d have to find a way to afford paper and perhaps a manual typewriter. (or a notebook and pen?) Not to mention that I’d be spending so much time trying to forage for food and warm clothing that I’d have less time to write.

You get my point.

Perhaps the author of the aforementioned article doesn’t desire wealth and riches. That’s fine! Really, just like there’s nothing wrong with being rich, there’s nothing wrong with living a meager lifestyle - as long as it’s done by conscious choice.

Feeling powerless over your circumstances and yearning for something better serves no one. Choosing to take control of your creative power and direct it in ways that improve ANY aspect of your life is a good thing.

Want a deeper spiritual life? Want to feel joyful and content on a daily basis? The Law of Attraction can help you do that, and more.

It’s all about getting clear about what you want, and choosing to attract something better, whatever that may be.

P.S. Happy Valentine’s Day!! :-)

Law of Attraction: What exactly can we attract?

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Diane had a great question: Okay, I’m trying to read up on the LOA, and I have yet to see the movie [The Secret] (but I will!),so forgive me if this question is answered in the movie. Can we attract situations into others’ lives? For instance, if someone is sick, can we attract healing vibes for them, or only to ourselves? Thanks!

Yes, and no. I think we can certainly call in healing energy for someone else through the act of prayer or positive thoughts. But I also think that they have to be willing to receive that healing. If they’re not, we can’t interfere with their free will. Just like no one else can force their will on us. Does that make sense?

What I usually do is pray and visualize healing energy to a person, with the intention that if they don’t want it, it will move on to someone else in the world who DOES want it. That way the energy isn’t floating around out there with no destination in mind. It sounds silly, but I think it works. :-)

Now, as far as attracting things to ourselves, there is one aspect that seems hard to grasp. And that is, according to what is said in that movie, we attract EVERYTHING that happens to us in our lives. I do believe that, but it seems so impossible in certain scenarios.

Why on earth would we attract a car accident, or cancer, or the loss of a job, or a divorce? In my opinion, it works like this: we’re not attracting those things on purpose; they are the result of our underlying beliefs. A simple example would be, if we don’t believe we deserve health and love and happiness, we’ll do things to sabotage it when it arrives in our life.

At the same time, I truly believe that we attract certain experiences in order to grow from them. I think this process is mostly on a spiritual level, and NOT part of our conscious awareness. Anyone who has gone through extremely difficult circumstances can attest to the fact that it was a worthwhile experience, simply because it strengthened them and helped them to grow more into themselves.

On a conscious level, we don’t want these experiences because they’re painful, but on a spiritual level, we see only the amazing benefits at the end of it all. :-)

I hope this makes sense. I’m certainly no expert on the Law of Attraction, but I’ve been studying and working with these principles for years in varying forms in my own life, and the more I focus on them, the more amazing changes I see in my own life. And even better, the more I learn about myself and what I’m capable of.

Feel free to post other questions, or differing opinions, etc! It’s a fascinating topic to think about and talk about.
